CHRIS NEWMAN

An Acoustic Tribute to Rory Gallagher

Chris Newman: An Acoustic Tribute to Rory Gallagher - here's one well worth checking out if your're a Rory fan. Excellent acoustic pickin' by Chris with help from Terry Butters on piano and Steve Lockwood on harp. An inspired method of paying a tribute to a master guitarist - and it works!

Thirty years ago a 15 year old Chris Newman stood outside a pub trying to watch Taste through the open door and became a life time fan of Irish guitarist/vocalist Rory Gallagher. Although best known for his rocking electric trio work, the late Gallagher was, of course, a fine acoustic player also, as young Chris soon discovered with the release of Rory's eponymous 1971 solo debut album.

Five Gallagher covers are complemented by borrowings via Rory from Broonzy, Led Belly, House, Blind Boy Fuller and Tony Joe White. Gallagher's instrumental "Unmilitary Two Step" introduces Newmans clean picking; Broonzy's "Bankers Blues" reveals him to be a fine vocalist also, his vocals and slide work ably supported by Terry Butters on piano and Steve Lockwood harmonica.
